Online storage cloud: which service to choose?

The well-named “cloud storage” has been entering our lives for several years now. With the advent of smartphones, being able to store and synchronize important files on multiple devices has become a real necessity. Cloud service offerings are constantly evolving to become ever more attractive to both individuals and professionals. In this issue, we present 5 online storage services known for their efficiency.

Whether you want to back up your family photos or share your presentations quickly with your colleagues, the cloud is the answer. Each service has its advantages and disadvantages. We analyze for you the 5 best online storage solutions, each offering a free basic package and paid options to access additional services and higher performance.

Google Drive

It is hard to miss the Google service. Its use exploded with the rise of Android smartphones. The big advantage of this online storage service is its integration with the other services of the American giant. Your photos from Google Photos or your Gmail attachments are saved directly to your Google Drive personal space.

For its free formula, Google offers 15 GB of cloud storage, which is one of the best (but not the best) offers in our comparison. It is possible to store any type of file: photo, video or even Office document. A function is then used to share a folder or file to your contacts, giving them the ability to read or even edit the shared file.

The rates offered by Google are traditional: € 9.99 / month for 1 TB of cloud storage and up to € 299.99 / month for 30 TB. For security, Google uses SSL to encrypt the customer’s transmissions to its servers.

On the other hand, confidentiality is not his forte: the American giant does not hesitate to use your data to improve its results. Some users have recently been denied access to their own files because they did not comply with the “Terms of Service” of the Mountain View firm, which states that it was a bug. Otherwise, Google reads everything that you circulate in its services, including e-mails and documents hosted on Google Drive. Not cool.

In front of Google, there is another US giant. Microsoft offers its competitor a solid cloud service that relies on its various offers. Microsoft OneDrive is also integrated by default on the Windows 10 operating system. Users can save all their documents, photos and videos in just a few clicks. The set can be modified with the Microsoft tools included in the Office suite.

The free offer from Microsoft is limited to 5 GB. On the other hand, the paid offers are relatively attractive, especially since they give access to the Office 365 suite that allows you to create and edit various types of documents. This access is however limited to a desktop, and comes in “optimized experience” on mobile and tablet; no dedicated application connected to the cloud storage space, so.

For 7 € / month, you get 1 TB of cloud storage and access to Office. A family offer at 9.99 € / month offers the same service, but for five different people. Otherwise, it is possible to add 50 GB of basic cloud storage for only 2 € / month, but without access to Office.

Security level, Microsoft also uses the SSL encryption protocol for transfers with its servers. But just like Google, there is no encryption locally. In addition, the American company scans any file stored on its Cloud service and reserves the right to delete any file that violates its terms of use.
